If you’re not aware of James Booker, the “best black, gay, one-eyed junkie piano genius New Orleans ever produced,” then take a moment to learn more as you listen to this, his next-to-last live performance, recorded in October, 1983. He would die suddenly mere days after this excellent performance–succumbing to the effects of the wild, hedonistic life he led.
You’d never know it, though, from this superior, vibrant, joyous performance, that you were watching a dead man walking (playing?). This is a true joy of a performance, and I implore you to enjoy it all, take it all in.
