Though we were somewhat skeptical of her early work, we were won over by Clairo’s sophomore album, 2021s Sling. With its gentle arrangements and demure, pensive performances, it proved Clairo to be more than a novelty viral act with a record deal. Her latest release, Live At Electric Lady, takes our appreciation a step further. Clairo recorded a brief live session at the famous New York studio, and her performance is, in a word, tight. Her band is on-point through the whole thing, delivering powerful and engaging accompaniment for her, what with funky keywords, hot sax, and gentle flute in the mix. We were won over by her rendition of Sling single “Amoeba,” a tale about self-discovery in the midst of the fame beast. On album, it was the most up-tempo track, while here, it simply flourishes as a funky but lovely pop number. This backing band of hers gives us hope that what she comes up with next will be delicious and rewarding. In the meantime, this EP will tide you over.
