Song Of The Week: Baxter Dury, “Shadow”

It must suck to be the son of a famous artist, to be caught in the shadow of your parent. Such is the life Baxter Dury must face, being the son of legendary musician Ian Dury. This short little ditty features a McGuire Sisters-like chorus that reiterates Baxter’s situation and negative thoughts. It’s the part that goes “Even though you want to be like Frank Ocean / But you don’t sound like him, you just sound like Ian” that will make you smile, as he replies in a voice that…well, sounds like Ian! Still, being able to laugh at your frustrations is a virtue, I guess. But it doesn’t hurt the song, and though I Thought I Was Better Than You is a sliver of a thing, “Shadow” is a definite highlight of this enjoyable set.
