Robin Guthrie needs no introduction; the Cocteau Twins guitarist has firmly made his reputation as a sonic craftsman par excellence. In recent years he’s been releasing four-song EPs, just brief enough to entice the listener for more, yet just fulfilling enough to satisfy. (He did, after all, cement his previous band’s legacy with EPs, so it’s a natural thing.) His latest release, Astoria, does exactly what it intends to; it offers relaxing music with fine guitar work. I’m most fond of “Starting Fires,” which shows what happens when Guthrie duets with a drum machine. Beautiful, sublime, and altogether what you expect from a Robin Guthrie release: quality.
