A stone-cold soul/pop classic ballad. Dig it for all its amazing properties: the singing, the choir, the orchestration, the lyrics. (Pardon the lyrical video; the only other versions I found of this were rather terrible 1970s/1980s rerecords) Read more

That Cars number yesterday was great…here’s a superior cover by Red House Painters, and one of Mark Kozelek‘s most powerful interpretations. Read more

We here at The Recoup will always make time for anything that says “Burt Bacharach & Hal David” on it–even crappy remixes. Bacharach is that special, and considering his vast catalog of hit songs, even his lesser material–and lesser interpretations–will always retain a certain sense of quality. The Sound of Bacharach & David is a… Read more

A seminal 1980s number, and a classic high-school prom slow-dance number. Note: If your band is gonna split up, might as well do so while you’re at the top of your game. Read more

The college-rock explosion of the mid-to-late 1980s was a fertile, creative time, even though the genre gets written out of the rock history books, thanks to the burgeoning “alternative rock” scene and subsequent “grunge explosion.” College-rock bands were melodic, a little rock, and not particularly ashamed of showing some ambition–after all, R.E.M. and 10,000 Maniacs obtained success while still… Read more

David Gedge has written so many songs about love, misery, and breakups, it’s a surprise Hallmark hasn’t offered his muse an exclusive publishing license. “Your Charms” is a fast, breezy, beautifully orchestrated song about falling in love with someone new. Expect to hit repeat on this one… PS: Production nerds, enjoy the fact that Mr. Steve Albini… Read more

A decade ago, a new breed of psychedelic musicians rediscovered Michael Yonkers, a 1970s-era Midwestern lo-fi psych-rocker who had self-released a handful of obscure but highly sought-after albums of grizzly, lo-fi, rough music that defies easy description. The good people at Drag City, in a continued effort to document the lost works of artists you didn’t know you… Read more

In 1985, I hated this song. Taken from the movie Vision Quest and released at the height of Madonna‘s fame, the song was ceaselessly played on the radio. While I always dug Madonna’s music, this song was overplayed, and i tired of it quickly. Herein lies the problem, though, for songs that get played too much: people get sick… Read more

It’s extremely hard to not enjoy chatting with Bottle Rockets leader Brian Henneman. Unpretentious, straightforward, and always enjoying himself, he is the antithesis of a lot of people in the alt.country scene, as he’s the real deal–not some cheesy impersonation of a down-to-earth country boy who loves a little bit of rock and roll and… Read more
