3AM Eternal: ABBA “The Day Before You Came” (1982)

One of this Swedish pop group’s final singles, it’s a different sort of song. Its lyrics describe the schedule of a lonely woman’s day, the day before she meets someone who will cause her heart to flutter–and break–and flutter again. The groove of the melody is steady, a marching beat that is quite different from anything else in the group’s catalog. It’s an interesting take and a beautifully-arranged number, and a fine statement from a band at its end.
