Los Angeles-based L7 merged metal and punk into a nice amalgam, a sound soon marketed as grunge. In 1990, they released Smell The Magic, a six-song EP on Seattle-based Sub Pop. Mere months after its release Sub Pop added three songs, and Smell The Magic became their second album. To celebrate its 30th anniversary, Sub Pop is releasing a remastered version of the album–the first time the expanded version has appeared on vinyl. “Deathwish” highlights the band at their finest: grinding guitars, powerful drumming, and the scary banshee wail of frontwoman Donita Sparks. The magic ingredient? New drummer Dee Plakas, whose overwhelming pounding transformed L7 into a potent force.
