3AM Eternal: The Buoys “Timothy” (1971)

Perhaps one of the grimmest songs to ever go to make the Top Twenty, Pennsylvania rock group The Buoys‘ sole hit, “Timothy” was a narrative song about three miners trapped after a mine collapse. Long story short, only two people returned alive, with Timothy having been eaten by the other two. Or was Timothy the miners’ mule?

Though the group would vanish into obscurity and release only one album, “Timothy” songwriter Rupert Holmes would later return to the top of the charts with an equally disgusting, vile song–but let’s not discuss that one right now.
