3AM Eternal: Captain Audio “Driving, Riding” (1999)

The brief lifespan of Captain Audio shouldn’t be cause for overlooking this Dallas trio’s two records; the debut EP, My Ears Are Ringing But My Heart’s Ok, released in 1999, and the following year’s sole full-length, LUXURY or Whether It Is Better To Be Loved Than Feared. The trio featured Brandon Curtis (UFOFU), Josh Garza (Comet), and Regina Chellew (Ruby), and their sound was a heavy psychedelic rock with a heapin’ helpin’ of catchy pop.

Chellew would move on, Brandon’s younger brother Benjamin would join, and they would change their name to The Secret Machines, and though their name changed, their sound was definitely rooted here. Still, these two records are essential listening for those enthralled with the 1990s Dallas psych-rock scene.
