This sad little instrumental was a hit in the fall of 1959; written and recorded by the Farina brothers, Santo & Johnny. It’s a sad, slow dance little number that seems to fit both the end of the summer and the last dance.
The song would experience an interesting revival in the 1980s in the film La Bamba, where it was used as the soundtrack to the tragic death of Richie Valens. Though technically this conflicts with period authenticity-the song didn’t appear until months after the tragic plane crash that claimed the lives of Valens, Buddy Holly, and JP Richardson–the song still worked wonderfully for the montage it scored.
