For this evening, let’s spend some time with a unique, compelling, and often surreal composition from Delia Derbyshire, one of the pioneers in 1960s experimental music. Her work with the BBC Radiophonic Workshop and the soundtrack for Dr. Who has influenced an entire genre of music. This piece, from 1964, is a 45-minute radio program that’s both a spoken word piece and an ambient masterpiece all at once. It’s a heady listen; if you’re in the right environment–dark room at midnight–the experience can be quite disturbing.
