With the passing of David Bowie, it is hardly surprising that the minutiae of his career is given a rethink; such is the case with his 1983 film, the excellent war movie, Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence, which stars Bowie as an imprisoned British officer, where he is held in a prison camp that is overseen by a young Japanese officer, played by Ryuichi Sakamoto. Based somewhat on a true story, the film is a captivating tale of the clash of cultures and the mindsets of so-called “enemies” who are held in closed quarters. The soundtrack, while not featuring Bowie, has long been considered a masterpiece, but has been out of print for years. The title track is a beautiful instrumental number that highlights one of Sakamoto’s most sublime compositions.
Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence will be released 21 October via Milan Records.
