Grandaddy’s reunion was tragically cut short earlier this year with the sudden death of Kevin Garcia. As a band, they’ve always been quite prolific, and every time they release an album, it’s a certainty that they’ll release a handful of singles, b-sides, and limited edition goodies. This past week, they’ve done just that, releasing a digital EP entitled Things Anyway, and the four songs featured are steeped in an unintentional melancholy. Last Place was a moody record from the get-go, and the four songs found here—two live tracks, two demos—only feel sadder. “Sadder” should not be mistaken for a lack of quality, as the songs here are quite beautiful; the demo version of “The Boat Is In The Barn” take that jaunty number about a breakup and give it a dark, atmospheric vibe that wouldn’t have sounded out of place on their Magnum Opus, 2000’s The Sophtware Slump. Whether or not Grandaddy is over remains to be seen; this four-song coda is a beautiful, melancholic coda to what should have been a glorious occasion.
Things Anyway is available now from 30th Century Records
