Song Of The Day: The Legendary House Cats, “Sometimes I Still Feel The Bruise”

We’re a sucker for the melodic, atmospheric indie-pop of the late, great Aberdeen, so when we heard that their mastermind, John Girgus, had compiled a disc of his solo work (listed under the name The Legendary House Cats), we couldn’t wait to check it out. It’s a fine collection of songs, with melancholic, atmospheric songs that range from delicate Aberdeen-like pop to mellow, acoustic-minded psych rock that reminds of Stoned & Dethroned-era Jesus & Mary Chain. But the song that really made an impression is a cover of former label mate Bobby Wratten’s band Trembling Blue Stars classic, “Sometimes I Still Feel The Bruise.” Taken from a Trembling Blue Stars tribute record released in 2011, Girgus has done the impossible–taken an already vulnerable song of heartbreak and made it even more potent and sad. In a good way, that is.
