Dinosaur Jr frontman J Mascis is one of the masterful manipulators of loud, powerful guitar rock, and can make your ears bleed while throwing down some sweet guitar solos. Yet he has a sensitive side, and it’s on his solo records where he takes the time to tone it down and offer up songs with sentiments that are as powerful as those guitar licks of his. His new solo album, Elastic Days, finds him in fine form, especially on the plaintive power ballad “Web So Dense.” His laid-back voice works perfectly with this sad, blues–minded number–we are hearing a little bit of the Allman Brothers Band’s “Melissa” in this one, and we’re perfectly okay with that.
