It takes quite a bit of talent to transform a Grateful Dead song from a folk rock song into a 1980s – style hardcore garage/ thrash number without sounding disrespectful or mocking, and that is exactly what makes Ty Segall’s take on 1969 classic, “St. Stephen” such a wonderful surprise. The prolific rocker’s new album, Fudge Sandwich, such a surprising delight: it’s a wonderful tribute to the music of the 1970s, where he takes on songs ranging from psych, funk, krautrock, and traditional rock. He’s always been something of a fellow who could throw out a cover song or two with adept skill, and it’s nice to finally have him do so over the course of a full-length album.
