James Booker Live At The Maple Leaf Bar, October 1983

If you’re not aware of James Booker, the “best black, gay, one-eyed junkie piano genius New Orleans ever produced,” then take a moment to learn more as you listen to this, his next-to-last live performance, recorded in October, 1983.  Mere days after this excellent performance, he would die suddenly–succumbing to the effects of the wild, hedonistic life he led.

From this superior, vibrant, amazing performance, you would probably never know that you were watching a dead man walking (playing?). This is a true joy of a performance, and I implore you to enjoy it all, take it all in.
