Luther Russell has had a long and storied career, yet over the past three decades he’s always remained in the periphery of obscurity, even as he was courted by major labels and watched his friends go on to superstardom. Last year, his obscurity began to fade away as he was the subject of a critically acclaimed retrospective album that covered the high and low points of his career. He’s delivering on the promise of his his talent with a new album, Medium Cool, and there’s no denying the delight of the very first song of the album, “Deep Feelings,” the kind of low down and dirty blues rock that every bar-band frontman wishes he could write. Here’s to Russell finally getting the credit he deserves and giving the world a hell of a great record to boot.
