Song Of The Day: A Certain Ratio, “Houses In Motion”

Now this is a nice surprise. In anticipation of ACR:BOX, a 40th anniversary box set compiling their singles, unreleased material, and remixes, Manchester dance band A Certain Ratio have shared one of their long-lost jewels: a cover of the Talking Heads’ “Houses In Motion,” recorded in 1980 with Martin Hannett as part of a session of songs for an unrealized collaboration with Grace Jones. That fact alone whets the appetite, and upon listening, we’re not disappointed. With a slick groove that’s almost an infringement on Herb Alpert’s contemporary hit, “Rise,” it’s a seductive number that probably should have been released as it was. We’ve always loved ACR, and  this new compilation is quite welcome, as  the band always shined  brightest on their singles and that aspect of their career has been long due for an anthology.
