Part of the appeal of New Wave and Post-Punk stemmed from its vision of the sound of the future. Pylon may have appeared from out of the backwoods of Athens, Georgia, but that didn’t mean they didn’t have their vision blurred by their surroundings. 40 years on, their debut single, “Cool,” sounds as mysterious and alien as it did when it first landed. To celebrate its anniversary, New West Records will be reissuing the single for next week’s Black Friday. If the rumors are true, though, this release also serves as a forerunner to a catalog reissue campaign for early next year. We hope that’s the case; their records have been out of print for far too long. Take a listen to “Cool’ and try to wrap your head around how this song still sounds futuristic.
