From the first moment we heard their debut single “Apple,” Brooklyn-based trio Hello Mary had us in their charms. What’s not to love, though? Crunchy alt-rock guitars that remind us of everyone from Dinosaur Jr to Belly, with sweet vocals that recall Velocity Girl and Juicy whilst sounding wholly original. Someone clearly fed Hello Mary a steady diet of awesome music, and the result is a promising debut album, Ginger. We are especially fond of “Covered,” which sounds like it should have appeared smack dab in the middle of the March 1995 edition of the CMJ New Music Monthly compilation.
That, my friends, is a very good thing.
