Radiohead guitarist Ed O’Brien is the latest member to launch a solo career, trading under the name EOB. His debut album, Earth, takes its inspiration from O’Brien’s time living in Brazil, where he soaked up the music and culture around him. But unlike his bandmates whose solo work often reflects back to their day job. What makes Earth so enjoyable is it doesn’t necessarily remind of Radiohead, often sounding like something completely removed from them. Case in point: “Olympik,” a superb dance number that recalls the techno of the early 1990s, accentuated with O’Brien’s seductive vocals. It’s an outstanding track from a promising debut, and one that delights upon each successive listen.
