Kamasi Washington composes very long, very trippy, very experimental jazz pieces, a direct descendent of John Coltrane‘s muse. Yet for the score he composed for Becoming, Netflix’s Michelle Obama documentary, Washington utilized remarkable restraint, a necessary requirement when composing incidental music. Though many of the pieces barely pass the one minute mark, one never feels short-cheated. The album’s “epic” track is the four minute “I Am Becoming,” a calming, cool piece of jazz fusion. It’s a different sound for Washington, but it suits its subject matter quite well; in its simplicity, sophistication.
