When Mark Lanegan released his post-punk tinged Straight Songs Of Sorrow, we hoped one day he’d go all-in and make a straight goth/post-punk album. Thankfully, he’s done just that with Black Phoebe, a new collaboration with wife Shelley Brien. The band’s self-titled EP really delves into the darkness in that early 1980s style. Lanegan’s voice is powerful throughout, but Brien’s up there with Jarboe or Gitane DeMone in providing the perfect feminine foil. Thus, we’re giving you two songs of the day today. “Shiva Danced Me Down” finds Brien summoning some evil spirits, while “Saturn Rising” is Lanegan offering his dark choirboy singing over a morose beat. We’ll always love Lanegan’s work, but it’s nice to finally hear Shelley front and center. Here’s to more music from the pair in the future!
