You might not know the name Jules Shear, but if you grew up in the 1980s–or happen to love the music from that era–then you’ve more than likely heard his music. Shear wrote Cyndi Lauper‘s classic “All Through The Night,” and his song “If She Knew What She Wants” proved a hit for The Bangles. Yet Shear has always maintained a prolific yet low-key career as well. His new album, Slower, will be released in November. “Smart,” the first single, couldn’t be catchier if it tried. An unapologetically earnest love song with a simple piano arrangement, it reminds us of Eels in only the best way. “Heartfelt” is perhaps the best way to categorize this song, one that should be destined for a place on love-crush mix tapes for all eternity.
