For the past few years, Hungarian progressive rockers Djabe have released music to accompany the fall and winter seasons. We quite enjoy this new tradition, as their jazz/rock sound fits perfectly with cooler weather, falling leaves, and early darkness. The Magic Stag adds nicely to their impressive discography, and it’s a labor of love, too. The band took inspiration from the paintings of Djabe guitarist Attila Égerházi‘s father, the late Imre Égerházi. Furthermore, the artwork features each song paired up with the painting that inspired it, adding a nice element to the album. Thus we smiled when we discovered that our favorite track, “Two Little Snowflakes,” paired up with our favorite painting. As with other Djabe releases, The Magic Stag comes with a DVD of visual odds and sods, including a documentary about Imre. All in all, a superb collection of enjoyable music.
