Song Of The Day: Jerry Jeff Walker, “Charlie Dunn”

Jerry Jeff Walker

“I wasn’t born in Texas, but I got here just as fast as I could!” — Jerry Jeff Walker, in concert

Now, we have no way of knowing if Jerry Jeff Walker came up with this catch phrase, but hearing him use it certainly¬†feels original. Walker, 78, passed away on Friday after an extended battle with cancer. He assimilated to Texas rather quickly, and in so doing became one of the state’s signature songwriters. His most famous composition, “Mr. Bojangles,” came early in his career and quickly became a modern standard. He had a steady songwriting career, and though his releases slowed down in recent years, it never stopped him from performing. For us, one of our favorites is “Charlie Dunn,” from his 1972 self-titled release. It’s the tale of a hard-working elderly man who took pride in giving the world a comfortable pair of boots, one pair at a time. RIP
