For several years the Bay Area duo of Shaun Wagner and Mila Puccini have been making music as The Acharis. They specialize in dark sounds ranging from moody post-punk and dreamy shoegaze, but they’ve really upped their game for their sophomore album Blue Sky/Grey Heaven. Expanding to a full band arrangement and tapping the legendary John Fryer (This Mortal Coil, Nine Inch Nails) to produce, Blue Sky/Grey Heaven is a delight for those who like their music dark and moody. For us, though, we love the psychedelic confection that is “False Positive,” the band’s second single. It shimmers with an ominousness that belies the pop beauty inside; the harmony between the two on top of the swirling melody reminds us of early Dandy Warhols. Like a strawberry covered in the darkest of chocolate, you’ve got to go through bitter darkness to get to the utter sweetness inside.
