Song Of The Day: J Mascis, “Death Of A Dream”

J Mascis Neal Casal

In 2019, the music world was shocked by the suicide of beloved singer-songwriter Neal Casal. A prolific musician with a healthy discography of solo records and collaborative projects. A few weeks ago the Neal Casal Foundation, in conjunction with Royal Potato Family, released Highway Butterfly: The Songs of Neal Casal. It is a massive 41-song set involving many of Casal’s friends and collaborators.

J Mascis, frontman and visionary of Dinosaur Jr, takes on Neal’s song, “Death Of A Dream,” taken from the 2004 album No Wish To Reminisce. While Casal’s version is a melancholy ballad, Mascis gives the tempo a swift kick and turns up the guitars. With his trademark mellow and stoned vocals, J hands in a version that wouldn’t sound out of place on his band’s classic Where You Been. It’s an amazing reinterpretation and is worth the price of admission.

All proceeds benefit THE NEAL CASAL MUSIC FOUNDATION, a 501c3 non-profit formed in 2020, which provides musical instruments and lessons to students in New Jersey and New York state schools where Casal was born and raised, while also donating proceeds to mental health organizations that support musicians, including MusiCares and Backline.
