Song Of The Week: Luther Vandross, “Any Day Now”

In February 2003, R&B master Luther Vandross held a triumphant live performance at Radio City Music Hall, where he presented a fine set of his classic hits performed in his inimitable style. Unfortunately, this was to be a bittersweet performance; two months later, he would suffer a debilitating stroke that ended his career. A newly expanded version of the concert–originally released as Live At Radio City Music Hall 2003–offers the concert in full. One of the highlights of that set is his take on the Bacharach/David classic “Any Day Now.”

In his performance, he happily announces that the song has earned him a Grammy nomination, and he introduces Chuck Jackson, the original performer of the song, who happens to be in the audience that night. It’s a fine, powerful performance that showcased the power of Vandross’s singing. It’s a fine testament to the gift of song the man possessed, an an all-around superb cover.
