Natalie Merchant returns from a creative break with her ninth album, the fine Keep Your Courage, an album filled with the quality intelligent songwriting and performance one comes to expect from her.With it being Mother’s Day, what better tribute to the mothers than with the album’s finest track, “Sister Tilly.” As she told NPR Music, the song is a tribute to the women who helped her grow and become the woman that she is; it’s not a specific woman, but an amalgam of strong women who mothered her into the womanhood she cherishes. It’s a powerful testament to the women in the village that it takes to make us who we are today.
