Deep In The Heart of Texas Music

3AM Eternal: Merle Haggard and Willie Nelson “Pancho & Lefty” (1982)

At the beginning of the month, we hinted that there might be more than one Townes Van Zandt appearance in this month’s examination of the music of Texas, and here we go. This classic appeared in the 1970s, but rose to the consciousness of the country world courtesy of a duet between Merle Haggard and Willie Nelson. Released in 1982, the song was a surprise hit. It didn’t hurt that the duo made a great video of the song. It’s a powerful little song, with both singers giving a power to the song’s words that its author simply couldn’t quite muster.

Oh, and look for a special cameo at the end of the song…
