3AM Eternal: The Beach Boys “Sweet Sunday Kind Of Love” (1978)

M.I.U. AlbumĀ isn’t exactly loved; if anything, it’s perhaps the nadir of the Beach Boys’ 1970s releases. “M.I.U.” stands for “Maharishi International University,” which is where this album was recorded. Even for me, in the heights of my apologetics for the band, it’s a bit too beyond the pale.

But there’s one song on here that makes it worthwhile, and that is “Sweet Sunday Kind of Love.” It’s the only Carl Wilson song on the album–he declined to participate, as he had practically walked away from the band at this juncture–but came back for this number. It’s a love song of the finest calibre, a jewel that needs to be more widely heard.
