3AM Eternal: Bavarian Radio Orchestra, Requiem For Soprano, Mezzo Soprano, Two Mixed Choirs & Orchestra (1968)

2001

This haunting composition, written by György Ligeti, and performed by the Bavarian Radio Orchestra, will forever be associated with Stanley Kubrick‘s masterpiece, 2001: A Space Odyssey. The science fiction classic is a wonder to behold, a sensual smorgasbord of production and composition on all levels. It begins, though, with a wonderful “screw you’ moment, with this piece playing a key role. (I won’t give it away, but if you’ve seen the film, you know exactly what I’m talking about.)

For full terrifying effect, try listening to this piece in the dark.

I bet you won’t stay in the dark for long!
