3AM Eternal: Buddy Holly, “Raining In My Heart” (1959)

Lubbock, Texas’ Buddy Holly was just coming into his own when he died suddenly in a plane crash in February 1959…but that didn’t mean his career was over; far from it. One of the first artists to be exploited to the hilt posthumously, he had a number of hitsĀ after leaving this life. This melancholy ballad–replete with a tasteful, if not somewhat saccharine string section, courtesy of Dick Jacobs–was the b-side to his first major post-accident hit, “It Doesn’t Matter Anymore.” It’s a lovely little arrangement, even if “rock and roll” it really isn’t.
