The Melvins
Across The USA In 51 Days: The Movie
Ipecac Recordings

At this point, The Melvins really need no introduction, do they? The long-running project of King Buzzo and Dale Crover’s been going on for nigh on three decades now, and they’ve never stopped being weird, loud, artsy, and polarizing. Their rabid followers devour any and all things Melvins. Unpredictability and experimentation-it’s their life blood. So it was no big whoop when they announced that they were going to undertake playing fifty-one shows in all fifty states (plus the District of Columbia) in fifty-one days, touring as Melvins Lite—a stripped down version of the band that featured Trevor Dunn on bass and a mixture of originals and covers—including Merle Haggard’s “Okie From Muskogee” and Wings’ “Let Me Roll It.”

That’s a lot of ground to cover, and The Melvins; Across The USA in 51 Days: The Movie resulted; it’s less of a film as it is a collage of three dudes and their three-member road crew taking an insane road trip. Perhaps it should have been called Fifty-One Short Films About The Melvins Lite’s Tour, because that’s exactly what it is. If you’re looking for something in-depth, you’re likely going to be disappointed. Each clip runs for a minute or more, and captures the band on stage, in rehearsal, in the van, in various restaurants, gas stations, and backstage parking lots. They also have fun with a special effects machine, doing everything from creating nuclear blasts that destroy the towns they’re in, causing the engine of their airplane to catch on fire, as well as creating weird artsy scenes that can’t really be explained. Oh, and random and repetitively gratuitous usage of the word “fuck.”

In other words, it’s simply The Melvins being themselves. Expect nothing less.
