Part of the joy of discovery of lost classics is to hear how an artist from the past connects with the future. Billy Stoner was a part of the Outlaw Country movement, a talented musician who happened to actually be an outlaw, and whose criminal activity put the kibosh on his musical career. Just as he had completed his solo album, he was arrested and spent a few years in the penitentiary, and his solo album was simply filed away in the back shelves, destined to be forgotten. Jump ahead to this year, and the long-lost Billy Stoner finally saw its release via Team Love Records. It’s a dusty, stoned-out country-rock affair, and “Lordy Lordy,” our Song Of The Day, is a delightful easy rocker. What struck me most about the song is how it wonderfully links the sounds of The Band and Lynyrd Skynyrd to the present, as Stoner is a vocal dead-ringer for Pearl Jam‘s Eddie Vedder.
