Over the past few years, Neil Young has been extremely generous to his fans, opening up his vaults and treasure trove of recordings, giving the world new records and performances previously unknown to the world save for him. His most recent offering is entitled Roxy: Tonight’s The Night Live, which finds Young in concert at the famous Hollywood club The Roxy in September 1973. As one might expect, this set is a performance of the then yet to be released Tonight’s The Night album in its entirety. It’s a loose, sloppy set, yet clearly Young and his backing band The Santa Monica Flyers are having a good time. Personal highlight is “Tired Eyes,” a country rocker about people up to no good. Young’s delivery here is absolutely sublime; he was an artist at the top of his game, and he knew it. Rock’n roll rarely gets better than this, and this is a fine addition to his archival canon.
