Beth Orton recently announced the formation of a new archival label, Lost Leaves, dedicated to exploring her vault of unreleased music, and the first release is a stunner. In the late 1990s Orton, who has always been quite vocal in her admiration of Tim Buckley, recorded a version of Buckley’s epic “I Never Asked To Be Your Mountain” with The Chemical Brothers. For some inexplicable reason, this cover was quickly forgotten about, and it’s a shame it has taken two decades to reappear. No matter, though; with its heady atmospherics and hypnotic acoustic guitar playing, this cover sounds anything but inferior. Such a wonderful discovery and a promising launch into one of musics most underrated talents.
