The late Marcel Cellier‘s vocal project Le Mystère Des Voix Bulgares formed in the early 1970s, and came to more worldwide acclaim in the late 1980s when esteemed 4AD Records label head Ivo Watts-Russell reissued their first two albums. It was a good fit; their haunting and otherworldly singing fit nicely within a roster that included Cocteau Twins and Dead Can Dance. Three decades later, a collaborative performance between the choir and Dead Can Dance vocalist Lisa Gerrard has appeared. Entitled BooCheeMish, this collection marks the first appearance of the choir since the death of Cellier in 2013, and the first under the English translation of their name, The Mystery of The Bulgarian Voices. “Shandai Ya” features Gerrard and is a catchy, joyful number that sounds like a Moroccan or Eastern European marketplace.
