Following up on his critically acclaimed, controversial, and debate starting video “This is America” with something equally as engaging was never going to be easy for Donald Glover, a.k.a. Childish Gambino, but with the release of ”Feels Like Summer,” he has done just that. Instead of offering nonstop symbolism that could be interpreted in multiple of ways, Glover takes the opposite approach––offering up a simple, no-frills animated video depicting him literally walking around the hip-hop community, surrounded by celebrities old and new alike, simply observing his surroundings. The melody itself harkins back to 1970s R&B with a touch of early 1990s hip-hop, all done in a tasteful manner. The song itself is about the environment and global warming, but is worded in such a manner, it could be interpreted in a number of ways. Of course, Glover is not afraid of a little controversy, and his depiction of a crying, MAGA hat–wearing Kanye West being hugged by Michelle Obama has certainly stoked the fires of debate. It is been suggested that Glover is soon to walk away from the hip-hop world, and that this video is a farewell of sort. I don’t know about that, but what I do know is that Glover has turned in a video and a song that is both profound and enjoyable, and effortlessly doing so in a way that earns Glover not-inaccurate comparison to Marvin Gaye.
