My Morning Jacket mastermind Jim James has been making is unique take on Southern rock for two decades, and over the last decade has quietly released his own solo material. Uniform Distortion, his most recent release, finds him returning to form, while never fearing to try something different. Yet the highlight of the album is the song called “Throwback,” a dusty roots-rocker that would not have sounded out of place on any of the other records in his discography. The song is pure Jim James at his best, and yes, it does live up to its title quite well.
(if you think it sounds like his main band, there’s a good reason for that, too; MMJ have performed it live quite a bit over the past few years, with some fans disappointed that it didn’t make one of their albums.)
