Lawrence, Kansas emo veterans The Appleseed Cast have made compelling and deep music for the past two decades, staying true to their vision, ignoring the trends of the day, and focusing on their musical growth. As a result, their latest album, The Fleeting Light Of Impermanence, offers up a powerful sonic blast that is complex with sophisticated depth, yet it sounds positively radio-friendly. It’s a hard line to balance, but they do just that. “Reaching the Forest” is a great example of this; it starts off with a heavy-handed and bleak ambient passage, which morphs into a song that would sound amazing blasting from a car stereo. “Commercial” got nothing to do with it; this is the sound of rock music, and damn fine rock music at that.
