Add Some Music To Your Day #4: Variations On “Love Theme From Spartacus”

We realize times are tough and isolation sucks, but we’re here to help add a little enjoyment to your day. We’ll bring you fine little broadcasts–nothing too heavy or too long–to help get your morning started right and to help you make the scene during this quarantine thing!

Today, we’re doing something a little different, but this little experiment is quite enjoyable. We’re examining the classic Alex North composition, “Love Theme From Spartacus.”  Months after the film’s release, an interpretation by jazzman Yusef Lateef became an unexpected hit. We offer those two takes, a beautiful interpretation by pianist Bill Evans, and a modern interpretation released this month by Sam Gendel. British singer/songwriter Terry Callier composed lyrics for his own version, and we conclude with two takes from him–the haunting original version and a sublime remix by Zero 7.
