Adam Schlesinger, best known for his band Fountain Of Wayne, passed away Monday, the result of a battle with COVID-19. Schlesinger had also served as a member of the pop band Ivy, and had a notable songwriting career as well. Yet for us, we can’t help but remember the first time we heard his beloved power pop group. Fountain Of Wayne’s 1996 self-titled debut album impressed many–including yours truly–with its crunchy yet highly melodic punk vibe. The first song of theirs we heard was “I’ve Got A Flair,” which, in true Power Pop style, channeled The Beatles through a filter clearly informed by Cheap Trick and The Cars. That formula brought international success in 2004 with their surprise smash hit “Stacy’s Mom,” but we’re still partial to our initial introduction. I could have easily chosen a dozen songs from his discography to pay tribute. RIP.
