Song Of The Day: Fountains Of Wayne, “I’ve Got A Flair”

Fountains of Wayne

Adam Schlesinger, best known for his band Fountain Of Wayne, passed away Monday, the result of a battle with COVID-19. Schlesinger had also served as a member of the pop band Ivy, and had a notable songwriting career as well. Yet for us, we can’t help but remember the first time we heard his beloved power pop group. Fountain Of Wayne’s 1996 self-titled debut album impressed many–including yours truly–with its crunchy yet highly melodic punk vibe. The first song of theirs we heard was “I’ve Got A Flair,” which, in true Power Pop style, channeled The Beatles through a filter clearly informed by Cheap Trick and The Cars. That formula ¬†brought international success in 2004 with their surprise smash hit “Stacy’s Mom,” but we’re still partial to our initial introduction.¬†I could have easily chosen a dozen songs from his discography to pay tribute. RIP.
