Matthew Sweet has never made it particularly hard to love him. For the past four decades, he’s written and released plenty of sticky-sweet and oft bittersweet pop nuggets. For his new solo album Catspaw, he hunkered down in his studio and made it himself. But the album’s creation came before the world shut down. Origin story aside, Catspaw is raw and fresh and powerful and, well, positively Sweet. We quite like “Drifting,” a lo-fi ballad with a slight hint of The Blues (both emotionally and sonically) whilst retaining that pained edge Sweet has mastered.
