Song Of The Day: Marilyn McCoo & Billy Davis Jr, “Blackbird”

Marilyn McCoo Billy Davis Jr

Another Black History Month has come and gone, and to close, former Fifth Dimension vocalists and lifelong couple Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis Jr have released a timely single, “Blackbird,” a 1968 Paul McCartney song that he later revealed to be a comment on the Civil Rights movement. McCoo’s voice is in fine form, aged and deep and wise while retaining the confident strength she became known for.

“Blackbird” comes from Blackbird: Lennon-McCartney Icons, the duo’s first studio album in nearly three decades. The album cover–which constitutes the video below–lists the names of victims of hate crimes and police brutality. No matter the situation, none of these victims deserved their fate. And it’s at this point that we would like to remind you, dear readers, of something The Recoup holds dear:

EVERY MONTH IS BLACK HISTORY MONTH.
