When first I heard Cassandra Jenkins’ “Hard Drive,” I thought it was Saint Etienne; Jenkins has mastered Sarah Cracknell’s spoken-word observations quite well. Indeed, “Hard Drive” is a collection of vignettes of people she’s met, friends and strangers alike. An Overview on Phenomenal Nature, her second album, is a heady, thoughtful, and beautiful release, full of moments of melancholy and wistfulness such as on offer with “Hard Drive,” and one feels a little bit smarter and more introspective after listening to her—a good thing.
