3AM Eternal: Gerard McMann, “Cry Little Sister” (1987)

Gerard McMann was a soft-rock studio musician and songwriter who contributed this little song to the movie The Lost Boys. It’s not Goth, not anywhere close–it owes more to Richard Marx than anything remotely of the Dark Side–but for suburban American kids, this was something new, dark, sinister, a gateway drug. I won’t lie, I liked it, too, even though nowadays I can see it for what it is–a big budget recording aimed straight at the pocketbooks of disaffected teenagers, as contrived as New Kids On The Block.

Not that there’s anything wrong with that….
