Star was the one-and-done shoegaze power trio helmed by longtime scene veteran Scott Cortez, the man behind astrobrite and genre-defining loveliescrushing. Star’s sole album, Devastator, found him in transition. With loveliescrushing seemingly in retirement, Star wasn’t that radically different from their earlier output, albeit much less abstract than later records. With frontwoman Shannon Roberts offering up dreamy, blissed-out vocals, Devastator was a nice throwback to Cortez’s earlier, more traditional rock sounds, and even though it was a one-off–loveliescrushing would come out of retirement shortly after this album’s release–it was a wonderful one-off.
Devastator is out now via Saint Marie Records.
